The Changing Face of General Practice: Seminar with Dr Victoria Kerry
Today at TMLEP, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr Victoria Kerry for a highly engaging and thought-provoking seminar on the evolving landscape of General Practice. With her extensive experience as a GP, Dr Kerry offered an insightful overview of how multidisciplinary teams are reshaping the delivery of primary care in the UK.
Central to her talk was an exploration of the growing role of Physician Associates (PAs) and other Allied Health Professionals such as Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Paramedics, within general practice. Dr Kerry shared a grounded, clinician’s perspective on how these roles are increasingly integrated into primary care teams to support service delivery, especially in the face of mounting pressures on the NHS workforce and the changing needs of patients.
Her seminar thoughtfully addressed both the opportunities and the challenges presented by this shift. While the inclusion of non-medical professionals can enhance accessibility and streamline care, it also raises important questions about supervision, clinical boundaries, and patient expectations.
Crucially, Dr Kerry did not shy away from current controversies in the profession. She addressed the ongoing debate surrounding the scope of practice for PAs, the public’s understanding of their role, and the broader implications of the legal action involving the General Medical Council (GMC). Her candid discussion underscored the need for clear regulation, robust training, and transparent communication with patients and the public.
At TMLEP, we are committed to staying ahead of the evolving dynamics in clinical practice and understanding their medico-legal implications. Dr Kerry’s seminar provided valuable context to support our ongoing work in clinical risk analysis and litigation support.
We extend our sincere thanks to Dr Kerry for her time, expertise, and dedication to advancing thoughtful discussion in this rapidly changing area of healthcare.
